Mountain Lion Sighting

Yesterday afternoon (October 23) at about 5:30pm, a resident at the end of Avenida Alondra observed a mountain lion crossing his property.  It was seen near the street.  The animal did not confront or threaten anyone.  Fish and Game and the Sheriff's dept was notified. 

The ranch is home to many species of animals, including coyotes, bobcat and mountain lions. These animals are native to the area and can be attracted around homes by leaving pet food out, the presence of small pets, etc. State Fish and Game warn people to not leave food or pets outside and keep a close eye on small children- especially during early morning or late afternoon times. In addition, do not jog, bike or hike alone; do not approach a coyote, bobcat, or mountain lion.
Sometimes the attraction of smaller wild animals attracts the bigger animals as well.

These animals are most active at dawn, dusk and at night.
Often deer are attracted to the area because of food sources, same with opossums, raccoons, and other prey. These animals are often prey for larger animals.

In the past, neighboring communities have had sightings as well. Mountain lions usually avoid humans; they are quiet, solitary and elusive. They can have a range of 200 miles.

Please take precautions to avoid coming in contact with these animals. Below are referral numbers you can call for more information. Refer to the websites below. Whats Going On?

You may see a lot of traffic signs and the road closed in the center of the village.  Today is the Country Friends Annual Fashion Show.  http://www.thecountryfriends.org/

The following roads are closed today from 7am till about 5pm:
Avenida De Acacias from El Tordo to La Flecha (use La Granada to get around)
Paseo Delicias at Avenida De Acacias
Linea Del Cielo from El Tordo to Paseo Delicias (use El Tordo to La Granada to detour)
La Gracia from La Flecha to Paseo Delicas (this section will be closed Friday Sept 21 as well).

Mountain Lion, again....

A Mountain Lion was sighted at 06:50 am on 8/26/2012 in the backyard of home in the 15300 block of El Camino Real. The animal was not aggressive and was traveling east through the property towards the La Madreselva area.  Fish and Game was notified. 

A Previous sighting was reported on El Acebo Del Norte. A homeowner came to the Patrol Office to report that he saw a large Mountain Lion in his backyard at approx. 1800 hrs, Monday 8/20/12 when his dog started barking excitedly.  The cat walked slowly through the yard until it saw the homeowner and started toward him slowly.  The homeowner stayed in his home and the cat walked away growling. California Dept. of  Fish and Game was notified and is investigating the incident.   Please refer to the below post regarding Mountain Lions and wildlife safety.   If you see an animal that looks like a Mountain Lion, notify Fish and Game right away.  If the animal is threatening, call 911.

Patrol News

We just presented our six month report to the Board.  Overall, the numbers of calls we handle has not increased compared to last year.  We handled a few more alarm calls and our vehicle collisions are less than they were this time last year.   Burglaries are up- we are working closely with the Sheriff on these cases.  Although we have  a spike in burglaries, the crime rate here is low.  Residents are encouraged to lock up and turn the alarm on!  Many of our burglaries are entry through unlocked doors- simple steps can deter the crooks and keep your place safe. Take good, clear photos or video of your valuables- jewelry, computers, cameras, etc.  Take a picture of the serial number if it has one. Keep it up to date too. 

If you see anyone that doesn’t belong, or a car that doesn’t fit, call us.  We will check it out.  Call right away.  It doesn’t help to hear about a suspicious person two or three days after the fact.

4th of July Parade

On the 4th we will be holding our 31st Parade.   NEW this year, we will be forming up in the RSF School parking lot.  If you are in the parade, just line up in the pick up/ drop off lane next to the curb.  Do not park in the parking spaces.  The line forms on a first come, first served basis.  Line up starts at 12:15pm, the Parade starts at 1pm. 

Some tips and rules for the parade:

1. Kids, Bikes go to the back of the line
2. Kids have to wear Helmets if they are on bicycles (good idea for skateboards too)
3.  Please, no candy in cars, floats. Throwing candy causes small kids to run into the moving vehicles.
4. Tell your children to stay in formation.  It is dangerous if they run ahead or through the parade.
5.  Antique cars overheat.  If the car has radiator or cooling issues, it may be best not to drive it. 
6. Horses are last.  Only well trained parade horses should participate.  The route is noisy with loud speakers, sirens and lots of people.  If the horses cannot be controlled safely we will ask them to move out of the parade.
